The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he was staying under confinement pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" came to light.

This included trying to remove his tracking device and a invitation to a public vigil that could enable a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the protest called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a assembly of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or observe everything from your phone there on your sofa? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could "pray for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the judge's decision was the chance of his move to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a background of planning to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.

The legal document emphasizes that the United States embassy in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

Worldwide Consequences

The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist American leader Trump, causing him to implement a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

Bolsonaro is being detained in a national police facility in the capital and will experience a detention review on the next day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that the former president be allowed to depart his residence for medical care, saying he demanded ongoing care for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was determined responsible of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the presidential race to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to murder the current president and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was stopped because it didn't receive the endorsement of the armed forces officials. His successor was took office without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed government buildings in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The security forces stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been incited by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also barred from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 national vote.
