Critical Role Season Four Unveils the Soldiers Group

Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master the talented storyteller has maintained audience suspense with extensive world-building, a wide array of personalities, and a exciting storyline showcasing divine entities, evil spirits, and dark forces growing in power within the urban setting.

Note: Spoilers for Episode 3 of Campaign 4 lie ahead.

The Combat-Oriented Party Revealed

Episode 3 finished on a huge suspense moment and introduced the first table of heroes who will split off from the primary party to undertake their independent quest, apart from the additional parties.

This warrior group features Teor Pridesire (portrayed by Travis), the nimble rogue (the talented performer), the fierce warrior (Whitney), Wicander Halovar (Sam), and the mysterious adventurer (the actor).

The Reason for Division

Considering a large ensemble, it was obvious from the beginning that having everyone at one table would be unworkable.

This explains, the first four episodes of this story serve as an Introduction, weaving together the individual narratives before splitting into three distinct groups: Fighters, Schemers, and Explorers.

Characteristics of the Combat Party

Per the Dungeon Master, the combat-focused party is for players who are drawn to a traditionally charged fight-heavy narrative style where peaceful solutions are scarce.

At first glance, characters like the hesitant healer Wicander Halovar might look out of place, but the developments of the latest installment make it clear why these five characters are best suited for the Soldiers table.

Motivations for Departure

First, the group has a clear idea where to go next after a intense initial meeting with the antagonists.

A former ally of Thjazi—whose demise started the campaign’s events—manipulated the enemy for his own means, invading the secret base, attacking the rogue, and swiping all the magical artifacts to auction.

Casimir then cleared his liabilities and ran away to a fortified location in the northern region, north of Dol-Makjar, with Cyd pursuing him.

Character Drivers

Secondly, each character has a individual motive to leave the city Dol-Makjar:

  • The agile hero, as Thjazi’s partner and best friend, wants vengeance.
  • The adventurer knows the region and advises that it is a nasty place.
  • The warrior and The cleric, having resisted his family’s wishes to eliminate the target and instead rescued him, have no other options.
  • But, their position as important members in House Halovar could enable the group reach areas they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Additionally, Teor vowed a life debt to Wicander for his deliverance and will now go with him wherever.

Pursued by Authorities

Lastly, all of them are sought by the authorities that rule Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making lingering locally no longer safe:

  • The rogue and The hero are recognized lawbreakers.
  • Tyranny and The healer defied the influential house and the army of fiends they are aligned with.
  • The fighter is marked for death by the clan.

This leaves them no alternative but to travel to Timmony in pursuit of the antagonist.

Future Episodes

From the latest episode’s post-show segment, we discover that the Soldiers table will not appear next week, leaving the rest of the participants to round up the Questers and Strategists parties.

Fans can anticipate learning which adventurers will be where in Campaign 4’s concluding setup installment, available to watch on next week.
