European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
