Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People buying such medications need to be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

The team emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Experts believe the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated weight return.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the medication describe a powerful return of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you become starving," described a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural management.
